26 Aug Development Diary 1: The Announcement
Hellblade was first revealed at Sony’s Gamescom press conference exactly two weeks ago with the debut of the game’s teaser trailer. Our intention with the trailer was to create a teaser that announced the game with a bang, generated intrigue and set our stake in the ground for the game’s tone and quality.
Our first development diary tells the story of how we created that trailer:
Here is a version of the trailer from very early in its development, with some of the blocked out environment and selected shots from the mo-cap shoot:
These are hi-res screenshots taken from the engine of the environment, environmental objects and sword featured in the teaser:
These are some of the pieces of concept art created for the teaser:
Something that we do throughout the development of a trailer is paint-over frames in photoshop to steer the direction of lighting. These set of images show some of the video’s frames pre and post this paint-over process:

Posted at 20:42h, 26 AugustWhat an amazing insight into your development process! First of all, I’d like to say that I’m really proud of you for taking the step into becoming an independent studio. I can’t wait to see how Hellblade turns out. Just don’t let go of your creative vision, Ninja Theory; fortune favours the bold.

Posted at 10:34h, 27 AugustVery cool stuff! I was waiting excitedly for your reveal at Gamescom, and you really did not disappoint. Heavenly Sword remains one of my favourite games of all time, and I’m really looking forward to this next title. Cheers!

Posted at 13:33h, 27 AugustI’m really impressed by what I’ve seen so far and the BTS video has only helped to amplify my enthusiasm. The only thing I feel down about is the fact that this character referred to in the video as “Senua” looks and feels so much like Kai from Heavenly Sword but may be someone completely different. I so badly want this to be the sequel and the mood and tone suggest as much but it’s likely a brand new IP. Either way I’m excited to see the progression of this game!

Posted at 08:22h, 17 OctoberI’ve always loved how Ninja Theory uses in-engine cutscenes as much as possible to keep the game flowing smoothly, rather than chopping everything up with pre-rendered cinematics. So here’s my question: Are you currently intending to have a lighting engine that gives the same effect as “painting over” the still images like you did manually in Photoshop? Because that would look glorious.
