Development Diary 2: Art Inspiration

01 Sep Development Diary 2: Art Inspiration

Our 2nd Development Diary focuses on some of the early art inspiration of the team, in particular a reference gathering trip to the British Museum.

A Note: The Development Diary and this post contain pieces of concept art that are reflective of some of the directions explored for Hellblade. Some of the things that you see in the art may appear in the game, but many will not. It is just the nature of concept art!

Here is some of the concept art that features in the Development Diary:

Very inspirational! I truly believe history and past cultures can really shine when “infused” with a creative, brand new world such as the one you’re making with Hellblade. Definitely looking forward to the next Dev Diary! A shame I’m no programmer…

    Cheers from Barcelona,

It’s so… So… So horrifically beautiful!! I’m not much for the scary/horror genre, but I believe you guys are taking it to a whole different dimension!! It’s just so… REAL. Every single magnificent story you guys ever created was impeccable, bringing tale to reality with every footstep of your characters. And Hellblade is sending chills down my spine.
    All Love and Respect,

Thank you for doing these development diaries. It gets me really excited about your game and it’s amazing to see the evolution of the game as it goes through different stages.

I’ve always loved Ninja Theory’s art. Would it be possible for you guys to release some of these images in HD format for fans who would want to customize their phones/computers/etc with these arts and to show their excitement about the game?

Another great BTS vid. I really enjoyed how you guys referenced historical elements but are evolving it into the Ninja Theory style. I almost forgot how great your team is at concept art. Keep up the great work!

I have to say, you guys are such an inspiration. I’d give just about anything to make art with such talented and awesome people. I’m very excited for this game, and I’m so glad I found out about the project this early on! I’ll definitely be keeping tuned for further developments.

Awesome! You really got me excited with this! Looking forward to know more about the project.
On a side note, I would suggest you to put some effort in recording better audio of you guys talking in these videos – it would make them much more appealing (I’m referring especially to that last bit about open spots)!

    Good luck!

I’m very much looking forward to this. I’ve been a fan of ninja theory as a dev since the release of heavenly sword, and have been following it untill this day. You guys are one of my top 3 devs. That being said, I’m really looking forward to the game, and can’t wait until you start discussing combat. (Please, don’t do the -this enemy can only be harmed by this attack, this enemy can only be harmed by that attack-thing again. If you’re going for a character action game that is at least.)
On a side note, I didn’t even know Vikings had a concept of hell. Walhalla, Ragnarok, etc, sure (if that even is part of Viking folklore), but not hell.

I like what I’m seeing, keep up the good work!

PS: Pic #4; 300 much? Just saying, because people are gonna say it anyways. I really like #2 & 3 btw.

Welp, now I can see where all the comparisons to Dark Souls are coming from. Even without seeing them in motion, those creatures and environments look damn atmospheric. Nice job so far.
