Development Diary 26: Myths & Madness

03 Mar Development Diary 26: Myths & Madness

As we complete our Alpha stage of development for Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice we wanted to share a new development diary with you. Episode 26, Myths & Madness, explores how Senua’s journey is one that is intertwined with both her experiences of psychosis and Viking mythology.

Completing the Alpha stage is significant in Hellblade’s creation. It means that for the first time the entire game is playable from beginning to end. That doesn’t however mean that the game is finished. There is still a huge amount of work to be done across the whole experience. Some parts of the game are starting to look and feel just as we envisaged, whereas others are still only built to a basic level. The important thing at this stage is that all of the areas are laid out and the design clearly defined. Two years of hard work by the Hellblade team is starting to pay off and we’re ready for the next stage: Beta. This is where we can focus on the player experience – looking at the game step-by-step, improving it along the way, honing how the game will look and feel to our players. It is at this stage that we will start to add a lot of the small details that make a big difference.

We’re very excited to be sharing Hellblade with you later this year and we look forward to bringing you more updates on the road to release.

Thanks for the new Dev. Diary guys! I’m so looking forward to play this game. I hope the fighting mechanics are awesome and realistic.
Will you also release the game in a phisical format like a collector’s Edition? I’d love an artbook and a statue of Senua or some “monster”. Please do that!
    Keep up the great work!

What you present here is really looking very good already. I am really looking forward to experience the polished visuals and and sound when the game is finnished.
I love how you strive to create a deep, immersive and authentic game experience despite budget limitations. It’s great that the game is not all and only about combat. The way you to combine all the elements of historical setting, background story, story line, character, visuals, audio, and dynamic, realism based combat into an immersive, thrilling, fun to play one of a kind game experience seems to pay off beautifully.

Just worried about how the beta’s gonna work: will there be private or open beta ? I’m waiting for this game since more than one year, difficult to still be waiting ;). Awesome work, as always… thank you !

This is the first game I would be willing to play the alpha. Normally I would shy away from it because I want to see it finished but with the form of presentation the making of process… it feels that I want this game to succeed so much that I would play the alpha to help the team.

I’m just so happy to see another Dev Diary as it has been a stretch of time since the last one. Every time I watch these I feel the passion you guys are putting into this game. I’m always telling people about your game in the making and hoping they find excitement in what your doing as I do. Congrats to you on getting to the alpha phase, onward to hopefully another polished gem. I’ll be looking forward to it. Cheerio!

Been hoping to find a game like this for while (just discovered this). Appreciate the research on Viking mythology and beliefs. The little I know seems familiar in some respects, but unfathomable in others. Looking forward to this dark journey.

This is looking great, graphics, the concept, the mind game, plain battle. The beauty. Whatever this project turns out to be, it intrigues our minds, and can’t wait to fully cover the adventure in youtube.
