11 May The Viking Tower
Dominic Matthews
Today we’re sharing a new concept for Hellblade’s central tower:
In this new concept Alessandro ‘Talexi’ Taini has iterated on our early tower sketch, pictured at the bottom of the post. The aim of the new concept is to bring more believability to the structure, making it appear as something that could have actually been built by the Vikings. It now has a fantasy feel, but with a level of realism maintained.
As you can see in the landscape concept the new structure has a far more readable silhouette when viewed from a distance than the initial sketch. The shape of the rock gives the impression of a ship outline, but in a more subtle way than in the original. The two very distinct elements that make up the building, the stone and the wood, make it easily readable. The stone taking a strong, structural form and the wood serving the role of the organic, ornate piece of the tower.

Posted at 17:52h, 11 MayI love both concepts, but I have to say that the newer one looks even more intricate and (as you guys said) believable. I’m so excited for this game, I love how it’s turning out!

Keep it up!!

Posted at 23:13h, 11 MayI honestly liked more the first design. But I can understand from a gameplay/time perspective why the second one works better.

Posted at 10:11h, 13 MayHonestly the old design seems more exciting to explore than the new one. The first design looks like the Vikings have repurposed an old giant vikingship into a stronghold, and while while it doesn’t look as realistic as the new design, it’s not really over-the-top-super-banana-bonkers unrelistic either. But the silhouette do look incredible in the new design, but it feels more like an outpost/advanced watchtower. Both of them look really good and I love the raw and gritty feel of the concept art, you’re all awesome.

Posted at 11:49h, 16 MayI really like that it is more resurved with it’s easily identifiable silhouette, esspecialy since this new design fits so easily into the landscape in the concept art you have shown us. it looks like it was built there for its natural defence.

Posted at 22:22h, 23 JuneI actually like the old one better…
It is true that the new one looks far more like a tower in it’s silouette and is easier to spot, but I don’t think it looks more realistic than the other one.
The old one looks really epic and built to make good use of the space available, inhabiting the Vikings, so for me it seems more realistic (but that is a matter of the definition). The new one seems more as if the dragon head has the only purpose of an ornament and isn’t much of a help in battle or living. I agree with Johannes Stengård that it looks more like a watchtower (that intends to scares people away) than the center of attention.
But maybe that is exactly what you want it to be?
