Hellblade Announced!

10 Aug Hellblade Announced!

Hellblade has just been announced to the world at the PlayStation Gamescom Press Conference  in Cologne, Germany with the debut showing of the Hellblade teaser trailer:

Ninja Theory is defined by three things: ninja-class melee gameplay, strong character stories and a unique art vision.

On Hellblade, we will double down on what we do best to give you a deeper character in a twisted world with brutal, uncompromising, combat.

We are embracing the creative spirit that comes with independence without letting go of the stunning production values that we are known for. It’s not indie, it’s not AAA. This is a third way. It’s independent AAA.

It’s about making a more focused game experience that isn’t trying to be all things to all people but satisfies a particular gaming itch. It’s about being in command of our creativity so that we can give you what you want from us at a lower price.

It’s very early days in the project but we are opening our doors and inviting you to join us every step of the way. We want to show you how we make this game warts and all so that you can be part of this journey.

Our Hellblade introduction video gives you a taste of how we want to lift the curtain on video game development:

Let me be the first to say that I’m incredibly excited to see a Heavenly Sword-like project coming from you guys! 😀 What a relief! Having enjoyed what you’ve done with DmC, I can’t wait for a gameplay reveal.

I think its not just a HS-like game, this girl just looks like Kai from HS. Also Hellblade and Heavenly Sword are opposites – coincidence? I think not.

The reveal trailer was stunning and your approach to the development process sounds like something truly special. Like Cliff Bleszinski has been saying for a while, this open, anti-corporate approach is the future, and I feel really lucky to be enamoured with games during this time. I loved Heavenly Sword, which was my first PS3 game and Enslaved was fascinating and different, so I’m eager to follow your journey with Hellblade.

Wow, what ever you’ll do with that game i’ll buy it day1, like all your games since Heavenly Sword. And i’ll probably gonna love as much as all of them. Always appreciated your approach to designing characters and story.

Just saw those concepts of Razor…awesome. a pity that it isn’t going to happen, sounded better that Destiny and warframe together.
I’d signed on it if i were a Publisher.

by the way all those thing that apparently aren’t selling are those i’m waiting eagerly waiting for every year.

anyway i’m looking forward to play Hellblade

Thank you for giving us insight into the development behind Hellblade. I’m glad that you guys have realized that being so open towards the players (your customers) is the way to go. I look forward to Hellblade, and I just need to say this too: such a shame about Razer, but I can see why publishers were afraid that Destiny would outsell it (because it would’ve). And the multiplayer melee game looked awesome. Perhaps, if you could ever make DmC2, you can add it as a multiplayer feature?

Is there any way to contribute now? Like pre-buying the game already? I seriously want this endevour to succeed, since I am desperately missing something between AAA and indie games.

I really enjoyed DmC. Now I’m looking forward for this game to come out. Here in Russia most people buy games on steam so I hope there going to be a PC release of this game like in case of DmC. Also you did a greate job with MGS review. Good luck with your new project! From Russia with love!

It’s so good to see people taking risks and trying to do niche-market games with AAA technology. You guys really make video game as a whole go forward. Can’t wait to see the complete game and insider updates!

Hey, guys. Very excited by this project/game. The trailer was stunning. It looked like pre-rendered CGI, but I saw a few telltale signs of it being real-time or in-engine. I also saw a tweet that apparently confirmed it was made using Unreal Engine 4.

My question is, is this the visual quality that we can expect in the final game?

I can’t stress just how happy I am to see the studio behind the 1st PS3 game I ever owned open up to such a great extent. It was hard for me to enjoy enslaved because I hoped to see you go back and do something with Heavenly Sword. This may be a different game altogether but the beauty of Heavenly Sword is amplified here. In short my eyes are happy, and I’m sure my hands will be happy to hand over the money.

Yeah, but if it was on PC it would look even better. Being on PC too isn’t going to hold it back in any way.

I really like the design of the games your company and I would love to see in this next game are puzzles. Battles against many enemies and end bosses are great. But TIME hope that game does remind me of the ones we played in the arcade, games like Black Dragon, weapons or powerups hidden in the walls, and well armed dificeles puzzles to solve. Looking forward to this game, hope it comes out for PC. All the luck to you.

Watching the trailer felt like getting surprise Christmas gift. I know they said drawing from Celtic Mythology but I REALLY hope that it’s Kai. Heavenly Sword was revolutionary and ahead of its time in so many ways. I hope this game is the sequel it deserves! I’ll be getting my pre-order ASAP

It really is a good time to be a Ninja Theory fan, isn’t it? After enjoying your previous games, and combined with all you’ve learned from Capcom about the combat in DmC, I can tell “Hellblade” will be one hell of a ride! (Pun intended, heh).

Seeing the studio explore new heights with this “Independent AAA” proposition makes me even more convinced to, one day, join you guys as a fellow Ninja.

    Cheers from Barcelona!

    Hi guys,

Just wanted to say I am really stoked for Hell Blade. LOVED Heavenly Sword and looking back on it, it was pretty amazing what you guys were able to pull off so early in the PS3’s life cycle so kudos to you. Can’t wait for more information on this game. One thing that I always wanted in games like these is being able to cut an enemy and to have a part of their body come off *such as an arm, leg etc’ and most importantly, have it stay on the battlefield instead of disappearing. There is a really great scene in the movie 300 where there is this big battle and the camera pans from left to right, and it comes in and out of slow-motion, and the guy is just owning everyone, and in the process, hes cutting off legs and arms left and right, LOL. Something like that would be great in this game. Anyway just my 2 cents. Cheers and good luck. I hope this game sells millions. bye from Canada

The hack and slash genre is finally coming to nexr gen, thank you. I hope this game turns out to be everything I imagined it would be. There’s no doubt, the story will be great. You guys are iconic storytellers. The artwork look phenomenal, and you have my attention. Im very curious about how the gameplsay will turn out. Im looking forward to great combat, weapons, and bosses. Good luck guys!

I really hope that is Kai from HS! She looks a lot like Kai! It better be Kai who just happened to change her name to Senua haha. This would be a cool tie in to a second Heavenly Sword game. To have the Hellblade battle against the Heavenly Sword. Resurrect Nariko to use HS and maybe have Kai become corrupt and embody the raven spirit and use Hellblade to fight Nariko! Just throwing it out there lol.

I know I’m late to the party, but I can’t wait to watch/read this whole series. You guys are really doing the community a massive service by bringing the world of game development into the public light. As a indie game developer myself, I truly appreciate everything you guys do. Any look into a studio more successful than my own is incredibly valuable, and Ninja Theory occupies a space that I one day hope to thrive in myself. Cheers lads.
